  • Tim Dijkman is a Dutch born artist who has been living in Glasgow, Scotland for over a decade. Having studied Structural Design in the Netherlands, he began sculpting in ceramics and has developed his skills to work in wood and stone. Sculpture is something that has fascinated Tim for a long time for the way it changes according to situation, reaction to light and position of the observer; a real 3-D experience. To Tim, touch is an integral part of the process of making and experiencing a sculpture. "For me, carving is like starting a conversation with the material you are carving, discovering the story the crude shape has to tell, the promise of the hidden form." He likes to work with different kinds of wood and stone from varying locations to explore this individuality. The challenge is to find an individual expression of form within each piece of raw material. To achieve this, Tim brings together his idea of an imagined shape and his understanding of the wood or stone. The way the substance lets itself be shaped might dictate or influence the direction he takes, sometimes swimming against the stream to reach an ideal, and sometimes adjusting the original idea to get a more harmonious result. "The goal I have when shaping a piece is to find a harmony and balance between the material and the envisioned shape." The result is that every artwork is a unique manifestation of an idea for form, brought into being through exploration of the individual qualities of a particular piece of wood or stone. His pieces are very tactile and he encourages you to touch the pieces, because what's the point of three dimensions if you're not allowed to experience them.
